Hands, Wrists & Elbow:
August – October 2021 Syllabus

Week 1: Welcome With Open Hands

  • Orient to the bones of your hands, articulating in the numerous joints to reveal the structure of your hands
  • Awaken the intrinsic muscles to learn how to support the pathways of weight and the energy transfer within your hands
  • Turn your attention to that which is never absent, in an introduction on the sound vibration of Nisprapancaya (our sanskrit syllable for the 4 weeks)
  • Explore the unfolding structure of the bones, from your upper arm all the way to the dexterity of your five fingers

Objective: Get in touch with the incredible potential that is flowing through your hands.

Week 2: Structured Space Resides Within

  • Locate the center of your palm by opening into the fullness of your hand’s surface area
  • Investigate the stabilizing presence within your hand, accessed through the organization of the musculature of the palm
  • Access the domed structure of your palm and its relationship to other similarly domed spaces within your body
  • Learn more about the structure of your thumb joint, and how to support the health of this uniquely oriented joint

Objective: Center within your hand to recruit the most strength and efficiency.

Week 3: Tend to the Reaches of Your Hands

  • Coordinate the pathway through the carpal tunnel, anchoring strongly into the heel of your hand
  • Flow through unobstructed wrists, no matter the positioning or the direction of force
  • Bring awareness to the placement of your hands and the organization needed to support the range of weight bearing poses
  • Recruit the muscles that arise in your fingertips and activate in the belly of your forearms, for the full extent of your reach

Objective: Learn the ins and outs of your wrists to enjoy the vitality within your hands.

Week 4: A Journey of Continual Return

  • Exercise and challenge your hands and wrists by bringing all that we’ve explore into full body patterns and recruitment
  • Realize your hands and wrists internal organization, pivotal for posture, alignment, movement and expression
  • Fully enact your hands as a significant contributor to the well being of your body on a physical and subtle level
  • Commit to the health of your hands and wrists through regular assessment, full range activation and active listening

Objective: Through integration and extension, come to know the ever renewing strength within your hands and wrists.

Week 5: Connect to the Depth of Your Forearm

  • Orient to the bones of your forearm and elbow, getting a first look at the relationships between these long forearm and upper arm bones
  • Engage the same extrinsic muscles of your hand, from the perspective of your forearm and elbow and for the organization of the full span of these long muscles
  • Connect with the abiding space of peace within, in an introduction on the sound vibration of Shantaya (our sanskrit syllable for the 4 weeks)
  • Explore the connections that span from fingertips, across wrist and elbow, to attach to the base of the humerus

Objective: Turn your attention from what surfaces in your hands to the depths of your elbow.

Yoga class: Saturday, September 24th @ 12:30pm

Week 6: Fortify the Pathway with Positive Tension

  • Access the intrinsic muscles of your forearm, gaining the stability and mobility available in the length of your lower arm
  • Investigate the actions of pronation and supination in the forearm, distinguishing between proximal and distal initiations, coupling the two for fullest engagement
  • Locate the interosseus membrane of your forearm, its sheet-like shape and qualities, and the benefit of its presence
  • Learn to consider the tone of your forearms and elbows, gaining awareness of the tension in this length and the tools available to modulate the tone

Objective: Focus in on the actions particular to your forearm, to bring strength and ease into your arms.

Yoga class: Saturday, October 2nd @ 12:30pm

Week 7: Harness the Bend of your Elbow

  • Coordinate through a deeply bent elbow and a straight arm, working your way around the bend in both cases
  • Recruit the muscles that track the ulna into its greatest support of your upper arm and shoulder alignment
  • Flow through unobstructed elbows, no matter the positioning or the direction of force
  • Bring awareness to the pathways that support the continuity from hand to shoulder, and the pivotal role the elbow plays as connector

Objective: Learn to direct your elbows in support of the fullest reach of your arms

Q&A Discussion: Friday, October 8th @ 12:30pm

Week 8: Harmony Ripples Out from the Center

  • Exercise and challenge your forearms and elbows by bringing all that we’ve explore into full body patterns and recruitment
  • Realize your forearms and elbows internal organization, pivotal for posture, alignment, movement and expression
  • Fully enact your elbows as a significant contributor to the well being of your body on a physical and subtle level
  • Commit to the health of your forearms and elbows through regular assessment, full range activation and active listening

Objective: Through integration and extension, come to know the expanding presence within your forearms and elbows.

Materials released: Sunday, October 10th
